As the end of the year rapidly approaches I thought I’d take a look back at some of the momentous events that have shaped the US patent landscape over the last 12 months. With ongoing debate over patent reform, the Supreme Court hearing six patent cases in its last term and what looks like the end of the smartphone litigation wars (or at least the beginning of the end), 2014 has certainly been eventful. Anyway, without further ado, here is my take on the most significant stories to break the stateside.

There have been dramatic leaps in developing prosthetics, but there's one attribute in particular that's been largely overlooked.
Many artificial limbs are almost as flexible as, and function like, the real thing, and some even connect to peripheral nerves to allow for mind control of the prosthesis.
But researchers have struggled to develop artificial skin that acts and even feels like actual skin.
Now, an international team from South Korea and the United States has designed what they...
Eric Schmidt wants you to know that robots are your friend.
That makes sense, considering that as chairman and former CEO of Google, Schmidt has been heavily involved in the development of some of the the world’s most sophisticated artificially intelligent systems, from the self-driving car to Google’s predictive search engine. The company even recently launched its own internal robotics lab. But while Schmidt admits sitting shotgun in the self-driving car is not an “altogether happy”...
On Tuesday, Dec. 16, I will be moderating a free webinar that will look at how “big data” analytics are being used to provide new windows into legal research. Specifically, we will look at Ravel Law and PacerPro, two tools that are providing new ways of looking at case law and case information.
Ravel — which I wrote about in an ABA Journal article about “visual law” — uses visualization and analytics technology to move beyond basic research and reveal different perspectives on the law....
Many of us probably chose law school because we didn’t like math. That hasn’t changed. But the profession is changing, and the changes are rapid. Until the mid-nineties, you could only send email to others on the same network. AOL was then the largest network, but it did not connect its customers to the outside, the “Internet,” until 1995. Nothing would ever be the same. In 1997, two Stanford students registered the domain name “google.com.” Google grew in several directions, and in 2007,...
