Straus Institute Co-Sponsors “Women in Hollywood: 100 Years of Negotiating the System”

Women have played important roles in the entertainment industry from its earliest days, achieving success as artists and attaining leadership positions in the industry. Yet significant challenges still exist. Women in Hollywood: 100 Years of Negotiating the System, to be held November 15-16, 2013, will address the issues facing women individually and collectively in the entertainment industry. “Women in creative, business, and legal roles still face a scarcity of opportunities in entertainment,” said professor Thomas J. Stipanowich, academic director of the Straus Institute for Dispute Resolution at Pepperdine University School of Law. “We hope this event will help advance the discussion on how to manage conflicts and relationships, both personal and professional, in order to successfully negotiate the system.”
The two-day symposium, hosted at Pepperdine University, is cosponsored by the Straus Institute and the Center for Entertainment, Media and Culture. The symposium planning committee includes leaders from the Women in Film Foundation, Women in Film New York, Women in Film Los Angeles, Lions Gate Entertainment, Universal Studios, CORE Media Group, and River Road Entertainment.
Currently confirmed speakers include Nell Scovell, coauthor of Sheryl Sandberg’s Lean In; Nina Jacobson, producer of The Hunger Games; Melissa Rosenberg, screenwriter of The Twilight Saga; Lucy Fisher, producer of Divergent; historian and author Cari Beauchamp; noted American film and television director and writer Victoria Hochberg; Linda Lichter, entertainment attorney at Lichter, Grossman, Nichols, Adler & Feldman, Inc.; Victoria Riskin, former president of the Writers Guild of America; and Tom Sherak, former president of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences.
An evening reception held at the Malibu Jewish Center and Synagogue will conclude the symposium. Entitled “Lean In: Honoring the Next Wave of Hollywood Women Leaders,” the reception is part of Pepperdine University’s ongoing Hollywood Visionaries and Beyond series featuring a library exhibit and panel discussions on the pioneers of the entertainment industry. Legendary television producer, Laugh-In creator, and Pepperdine alumnus George Schlatter will also be honored in a Hollywood benefit to launch the George Schlatter Comedy Collection and Workshop at Pepperdine University.
