The Texas Office of Court Administration (OCA) has compiled data reported by trial courts pursuant to statute[1] since September 2010. In an effort to draw insights from the reported data, we built a website that allows users to generate custom graphs by specifying search criteria: courtstatpack.com/
Using “Options” search criteria, users can specify the time period and venues to be studied. Venue can be set to statewide statistics (default) or broken down by county, metro area, or court of appeals region. Graphing options allow the line graphs to start at zero or focus in on trend changes with a “Start Graph at Zero” toggle that defaults to zero. The focus is on contested dispositions, but a toggle allows users to broaden that query to All Dispositions. Pressing “Reload” will regenerate the graphs with the user’s custom criteria. Clicking over sections of most pie charts will break out trendlines for the topic. For instance, if the user would like to examine a jury trial trendline for a selected time period and venue, just click on the pie slice for “Judgment by Jury Verdict” and another pie chart will drop down showing how jury trials broke down by reported case-type. Another trendline will appear below that pie chart showing how jury trials varied over time. To illustrate, here are case composition and trendline graphs for jury trials statewide in the first ten months of 2017. Click on “Motor Vehicle” and another pie chart appears showing contested dispositions for that case-type.

It is free so find your favorite trendline and send it to us with a comment for an upcoming article.
[1] Section 71.035(b) of the Texas Government Code and Chapter 171 of the Texas Administrative Code require each district clerk to submit a monthly activity report concerning the criminal, civil, family law and juvenile cases in the county’s district courts. Reports must be submitted each month no later than 20 days following the end of the month for which data are reported. As a practical matter, there is often a lag in the availability of data. Readers may run reports at card.txcourts.gov/ReportCriteria.aspx?ddlReportName=115&ddlReportType=4979&ddlReportPeriod=.
