A San Francisco-based online portal that provides legal services to venture-backed and pre-IPO stage companies plans to expand into San Antonio, Austin, Chicago and Dallas.

UpCounsel recently closed on a fresh $2.4 million round of seed funding from Metamorphic Ventures and Crosslink Capital, along with additional capital from previous investors.

UpCounsel links the resources of law firms that specialize in working with small and midsize businesses. The company’s free software matches lawyers with potential clients across a dozen legal specialties. The site also serves as a repository for legal documents that business owners need. The company already has worked with about 1,000 clients nationwide.
