Lex Machina, a provider of intellectual property litigation data analytics, introduced two new improvements to its Legal Analytics platform that lets lawyers surface litigation data specific to a set of cases, besides the data analytics focused on courts and judges.
Lex Machina mines IP litigation data from PACER (Public Access to Court Electronic Records system), the U.S. International Trade Commission’s Electronic Documents Information System and the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. It cleans the data (e.g., normalizes party names and standardizes case tags) and builds metadata sets that become the target of its legal analytics platform.
The new Case List Analyzer and Motion Metrics features are “Custom Insights” in the Legal Analytics platform. The new features allow users to analyze cases and motions of interest.
The Case List Analyzer helps users select a list of patent cases by case type, date range, court, judge and more. With the case list in view, the CLA lays out the cases in four drill-down tabs: Summary, Timing, Patent Case Damages and Patent Case Resolutions. To see a time-frame for a list of cases, click on Timing and review case statuses such as Termination, Trial and Claim Construction Hearing and review the time to engage and complete those statuses or determinations in a neat time line. See Figure 1.
