The terrain seems to be changing faster than an infant changes shoe sizes. New companies sprout up, and in some cases, geriatric organizations get new homes. In 2011, Nolo became a wholly owned subsidiary of Internet Brands, based in El Segundo, Calif. At the time, it seemed an odd acquisition for the company, launched in 1998 from incubator Idealab. It began as CarsDirect.com, and now serves automotive, health, home and travel, legal, and diversified media fields. (In June, Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co. announced it would acquire Internet Brands.)
In 2012, Internet Brands took another bite into the legal industry, partnering with LexisNexis Legal & Professional to run one of the most iconic of all legal (if subliminal) marketing tools, 140-year-old Martindale Hubbell, best known for its hard-copy books ranking U.S. lawyers. The deal also included Lawyers.com, a consumer-targeted website that showcases the credentials of 2 million lawyers and firms, and also offers website development, search engine optimization and other Web services. In September, Internet Brands renamed the unit “Martindale, a Nolo company,” using “Martindale” as its nickname (martindale.com). Chris Braun, formerly an executive with ALM, is vice president and general manager of the legal unit.
