Bring in the FBI: Your Paranoia Is Justified

Anytime the Federal Bureau of Investigation is mentioned in the title of a legal technology seminar, it’s a sure bet the panel will be standing room only. If you placed money on that wager for the Wednesday August 21 panel at the International Legal Technology Association’s annual meeting at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, go collect your winnings.
“The FBI and Experts Present Security Updates and Strategies for Firms of All Sizes,” featured FBI special agent E. Brent Watkins, as well as Michael Lombardi, president of Vertigrate Inc., and Dominic Jaar, a partner at KPMG, and was packed with broad concepts and pragmatic ideas and tools to help legal technologists tackle these perplexing problems.
Watkins, who looked, acted, and talked so much like a stereotypic 1950s G-Man, started the 90-minute panel. Despite predictively-bad jokes and expert dodging of any question that even remotely hinted of an active case (e.g., Edward Snowden’s activities), Watkins offered concrete advice, warning the crowd that we are experiencing a “paradigm shift,” and that hackers “are already in the system.”
