Google Buys Messaging Client Emu, Hopefully to Make Hangouts Better | Droid Life. I seldom load Skype anymore. It is too intrusive, and I don’t make long distance calls with it. Google Hangouts is replacing messaging in Google apps, and will be a central place for all VOIP calls in the future. Thus, the acquisition of Emu, in itself a great messaging app, bodes well for Hangouts. I like the idea of getting all communication via Hangouts; but, now that unlimited smartphone calls just about anywhere can be made for free, I use the smartphone for my long distance and other calls exclusively. Since it is the device that is always within reach, that makes sense to me.
