AIG Overhauls Global Legal Operations

Legal operations at American International Group Inc. are undergoing a global makeover as the company looks for ways to cut outside counsel costs, increase quality, and achieve efficiencies in the 130 countries where it does business.

“We are undertaking a review of our legal panels [law firms] for businesses,” confirmed Aaron Katzel, AIG associate general counsel and head of its global Legal Operations Center (LOC).

Katzel told CorpCounsel.com on Friday that the LOC was created last year to combine oversight of legal work in two areas—claims and corporate/compliance. Previously these legal operations were split.

And the reviews overseas are well underway. The insurance giant recently chose 25 law firms to form a legal panel for the Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) region, according to Legal Week, a U.K. publication. The firms include Linklaters, Travers Smith, Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer, Mayer Brown, Morrison & Foerster, and Chadbourne & Parke.
