LegalTech New York, for all intents and purposes, has become a no-less-than-five day event. With the Tuesday-Thursday schedule, parties and briefings kick into high gear on Monday; pushing travel days to Sunday (or Saturday, if you are paranoid wise about typical winter weather). Arguably, it was a bit risky—or flat-out brilliant— to schedule ReInvent Law NYC for Friday, Feb. 7. The upside: Capitalize on the hordes of technology leaders who will already be in New York. The downside: Will...
This is an ongoing project with Adam Wyner (Dept. of Computer Science @ University of Aberdeen) and Wim Peters (Dept. of Computer Science + NLP Group @ University of Sheffield) … our very initial pilot project was presented at the 2013 Jurix Conference. Slides are located here and the case study paper for the pilot project is located here. Hoping for more to come on this project in 2014!
Just back from last week’s LegalTech in New York, and with the perspective of someone who has been writing about legal technology for more than two decades, I am convinced that I have never before seen a time of such intense and creative innovation in legal technology. However, it is not LegalTech that has me thinking that; rather, it is a legal-tech sideshow that coincided with it called ReInvent Law NYC.
LegalTech is billed as the largest and most important legal technology event of the year....
A joint French and British project has achieved broadband speeds of 1.4 terabytes per second over a 255 mile distance, which the companies are claiming as a record. The speeds are apparently the result of an “alien super channel.”
The project is the work of French firm Alcatel-Lucent and British Telecom. They carried out the tests over an optical fiber cable running from the BT Tower (a London landmark, pictured) to a research facility in Ipswich. Staff described the transmission as being...

While composing email on mobile phones is still a tricky mire of text prediction and flawed virtual keyboards, email reading is quickly shifting away from the desktop.
According to data from the US Consumer Device Preference Report: Q4 2013 from Movable Ink, way more than half of all email — a full 65 percent — is now being accessed via mobile devices in the U.S.
That’s up relatively steeply from just 61 percent for the third quarter of 2013.
Of the 65 percent of email that gets...

Take a moment and reach into your pocket, or wherever you keep your keys, and take a close look at your front door key. Unless you are a locksmith, a burglar, or a hacker you have probably never given that key much thought. You place the key in the lock, turn it, and the door opens! Engineering at its most elegant and deceptive simplicity—it just plain works.
Hold the key so you can see the peaks and valleys. Reminiscent of an Alpine horizon, these notches are what enable the key to line up a set of tumblers...
I agree with Becker that the candidates that he discusses for retarding U.S. economic growth in coming years, such as a technological slowdown or reduced private investment, are implausible; also that there are useful reforms, notably tax reform, that can stimulate economic growth. But like Larry Summers, whose recent paper “The 2013 Martin Feldstein Lecture: Economic Possibilities for Our Children,” NBER Reporter, 2013, no. 4, www.nber.org/reporter, has influenced my thinking, there’s a risk,...
