A law degree just got cheaper for certain students at St. Mary’s University School of Law and Indiana University Maurer School of Law–Bloomington, which have announced scholarship programs geared toward specific populations.
Starting in the fall, San Antonio-based St. Mary’s will provide full scholarships to as many as five applicants with proven commitments to leadership and public service. In addition to covering all tuition and fees—now nearly $32,000—the new Presidential Scholarships will provide recipients with $5,000 annual stipends.
The scholarships are among the first initiatives of dean Stephen Sheppard, who stepped into the job on June 1. Sheppard has said he planned to emphasize social justice and lower the cost of a legal education.
“We not only expect our students to graduate, we want them to pursue a lifetime of leadership and successful practice and service to mankind,” Sheppard said in announcing the scholarships. “Those are the types of students we wish to attract.”
