Plaintiffs Lawyers Form New Group, Disavow Competition With TTLA

Two years ago, Houston plaintiffs lawyer Steve Mostyn led the Texas Trial Lawyers Association (TTLA). Now, Mostyn and some other prominent Texas trial lawyers have formed a new advocacy group, the Texas Association of Consumer Lawyers.
Mostyn, who resigned from the TTLA in 2012 because he wants his money to go toward a “cause” and to affect legislation, believes the two groups have similar goals. However, he says, the new organization has a single focus: advocacy for the rights of consumers.
“A bunch of us believe that the most important thing we can do is elect people who support consumers, consumer lawyers and the right to access the courthouse through the jury trial system,” says Mostyn, founder of the Mostyn Law Firm.
“We just want to be the no-frill group,” he says, adding that the group will maintain a very low overhead, so contributions to its political action committee will go directly into campaigns.
“We are going to have a laser focus on politics and legislation. I’m not interested in the CLEs,” he says in reference to one of the services TTLA provides its members.
Mostyn says other founders of the Texas Association of Consumer Lawyers include Amy Witherite of Eberstein Witherite in Dallas; Kurt Arnold, a founder of Arnold & Itkin in Dallas, and Mitchell Toups, a Beaumont solo.
