Law Departments Are Keeping E-Discovery Inside the Firewall

At the International Legal Technology Association annual conference at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, a crowd of about 50 Law Department Peer Group members gathered at 8:30 a.m. on Aug. 20 for a 90-minute round-table discussion at the Law Department E-Discovery Roundtable Breakfast.
Discussion topics for the off-the-record, closed session were selected with the help of the group’s vice president Tom Morrissey, a senior director at Purdue Pharmaceuticals, who polled participants prior to the conference about hot topics they wanted to discuss.
Moderators were Julie Richer, legal technology program manager at American Electric Power, and Patrick Oot, general counsel at the Electronic Discovery Institute and special counsel at the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. In preparing for our discussions, we crafted questions to ask using ILTA’s new polling technology that displays responses immediately (attendees visited a website to answer the polls anonymously). While we normally operate under the aforementioned “Vegas Rules” (what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas), the group agreed to make responses to the survey available to ILTA and Law Technology News.
