The 14 intermediate appellate courts had a very productive year.
They ended their fiscal year with 6,749 pending cases, which is the fewest they have carried over since 1990, when they had 6,392 pending cases, according to data from the Texas Office of Court Administration. This year’s accomplishment follows a 17-year downward trend in pending cases in the courts of appeal.
“The courts have been making a pretty concerted effort to reduce their caseloads and become more timely in their resolution of cases,” said OCA administrative director David Slayton. “I think it’s just an exciting time for the appellate courts: They have been focusing hard on this.”
There’s another noteworthy thing about this year’s statistics. There were only 10,683 new cases added this year—which is the lowest number since 1995, when there were 10,097 new cases.
