Cornell Is Spending $133 Million On A Massive New Tech School In New York

Cornell University will open a huge tech school on an island in New York City. Cornell NYC Tech is the result of Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s request to create a new science school to fuel the growth of the New York City tech sector.
Largely responsible for Cornell’s ability to open up the school is Qualcomm founder Irwin Jacobs’ $133 million donation. Other prestigious universities such as Columbia, NYU and Stanford were also looking to open up a new graduate school mainly focused on computer science.
But Cornell NYC Tech won’t be the typical tech school. In every class, entrepreneurs will discuss the risks and proper steps in setting up a successful startup. Students will also work with an individual mentor to develop new products.
The objective of the school will be to harness the ideas of the next generation of Mark Zuckerberg’s and make sure their genius gets put to the best use imaginable.
Two students, for example, are working with a Google engineer to develop a software that can predict the level of severity of a torrential weather event.
The school will also offer business and marketing classes as well.
Eight different information technology degrees will be available, with three of them being dual master’s degrees from Cornell and the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology.
These programs will be: “connective media” for designing mobile tech, “healthier life” for health care and personal technology, and “built environment” for computing for the physical world.
The school won’t have any offices, as professors and students are to sit at desks with low dividers or at a large boardroom table.
