Google Inc. is ready to compete with Facebook, Apple and Microsoft when it comes to virtual reality.
Google CEO Sundar Pichai formed a virtual reality division and named Clay Bavor vice president of the division on Tuesday, according to Re/code, citing sources familiar with the situation. Senior Vice President Diane Greene, who joined the company in November, will take over Bavor’s responsibilities in overseeing Web applications. Bavor’s previous title was vice president of product management.
In addition to running Google apps such as Gmail and Drive, Bavor watched over Google Cardboard, the company’s early stage VR device, since it was introduced in 2014. Cardboard struck partnerships with schools over the past year and has a deal with the New York Times. Cardboard also integrates with GoPro, which brings virtual reality video to YouTube.
