Way in advance of a final deadline, all 254 Texas counties have gone live on EFileTexas.gov. And now the state is turning an eye to creating next-generation electronic-filing features like an online court document viewer for courts across Texas.
The Texas Supreme Court’s mandate that lawyers use e-filing in most civil cases started in January 2014. The mandate was for the largest counties and will not be fully effective statewide until July 2016. Nevertheless, e-filing is now available and permissive in the entire state, said David Slayton, administrative director of the Texas Office of Court Administration.
Slayton said the Texas Supreme Court’s Judicial Committee on Information Technology (JCIT) is now working on an idea to create a state system similar to the federal courts’ PACER, or Public Access to Court Electronic Records, system.
